We are setting satire aside for a moment to explore a theory we have been tossing around: Is Melania Trump trying to gently signal to the world that she opposes her husband?
We will list a handful of examples below detailing ambiguously passive-aggressive actions coming from the First Lady. None of these examples, if taken as an isolated incident, really amount to much. However, we ask you to look at them in their totality. With all of these actions combined, is it possible that Melania actually despises Donald, and is just simply being dragged along for the ride?
You be the judge …
The First Lady’s Noble Cause:
Once Donald Trump won the election, Melania inherited an implicit duty to come up with a cause to stand behind. Nancy Reagan chose the “Just Say No” campaign to teach kids to avoid drugs, Hillary Clinton took on health care, Laura Bush advocated the importance of childhood literacy, and Michelle Obama worked to fight childhood obesity — But what did Melania Trump choose?
Cyber-bullying. While cyber-bullying is a serious and growing issue in the United States, was Melania taking a subtle shot at her husband here? If you look back on the past few years, Donald Trump has been, arguably, the world’s most famous cyber-bully. He has used Twitter to humiliate obese people, and belittle woman with “small breasts.” He has also used it to slander Rosie O’Donnell and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to call Mark Cuban “stupid,” and to shame Nordstrom (while President) for discontinuing his daughter’s clothing line.
Melania Liked a Tweet Which Slammed Their Marriage:
In early May of 2017, Melania Trump hit the “like” button on a Tweet which read: “Seems the only #Wall @realDonaldTrump’s built is the one between him and @FLOTUS #Melania #trump”
The Trump administration was quick to back away from this issue saying that the First Lady did not like the Tweet, and they did not know how it happened. In their defense, it’s believable that the First Lady sees a Tweet she is tagged in, looks at it, and accidentally hits “like” on it — But is it possible she did that intentionally, knowing how easy it would be to just say, “oops?”
Barron’s Awesome T-Shirt:
On June 12th, 2017, Melania and Barron landed on the Marine One helicopter to permanently move to the White House. Until now, the two have been living at Trump Tower, a few states away Donald Trump himself. There has been a lot of speculation that this is an indication Melania and Donald do not get along. So, what’s with Barron’s t-shirt which reads, “The Expert.”
Surely, if Trump had his way, Barron would have been looking like royalty in a $10,000 business suit. Instead, Melania had him dressed in jeans and a minimalist t-shirt which read, “The Expert,” and playing with a fidget spinner. Was this just an attempt to make the First Family appear human? Or, was Melania trying to send a passive message that her 11 year-old boy is “The Expert,” knowing full and well that Donald would be pictured walking side-by-side with Barron? Let’s face it — “I’m with stupid” would have been too obvious.
Melania Denies Holding Trumps Hand … Twice in Two Days:
During Donald Trump’s 9-day trip to the Middle East and Europe, Melania made headlines by appearing to swat away Donald’s hand when he attempted to hold it. This single incident made international headlines. However, the very next day when Donald attempted to hold her hand again, she quickly moved her hand away from him to do the old “move my bangs out of the way” trick.
Melania may be a new First Lady, but she is no stranger to being in the spotlight and maintaining a positive public image. Is it possible she was trying to show the world that their marriage is just a show? Surely she would at least fake wanting to hold hands if she cared even a little bit.
We’ve chosen to stop here, but a simple Google search will show you that there is much more where this came from. Everything from disgusted glares behind his back, to the forced-enthusiasm she showed dancing with him on election day, while being genuinely happy dancing with a different man. This is, by no means, hard evidence. As we stated before, each one of these things is a small issue that can be easily explained away — But when they start to add up: What’s really going on here, Melania?
